I started this Memorial Weekend holiday with an 8 a.m. wake-up to see Bob play the drums with the fellow Local 21 Honor Guard at Oakland Cemetery. The annual ceremony honors the firefighter heroes who lost their lives on the call of duty.

On Memorial Day, Diane,Bob and I toured Oakland Cemetery with an expert on the Civil War. He was fun and fact-filled but all I can remember is this: *Captain So-and-So insisted on going into battle in his full promotional regalia to the chagrin of his men, and was the first one shot by the rebels. *After being questioned about the location where they were setting up camp, a General insisted his men were "as safe as they would be at home in their mother's featherbeds", which opens another whole can of worms, and in the morning they discovered they were completely surrounded by the enemy to dire consequences. *More Civil War soldiers were killed by sickness than combat, and the Minnesota First was the first to volunteer for the Union in the Civil War!

Last but not least, my own Bob won the Red Cross Hero Award in the Firefighter Category and was honored at a breakfast at Target Field (and even had his picture put on a Wheaties Box! Breakfast of Champions.)
